Some ten months after his chart battle with Rage Against the Machine, McElderry released his debut album, 2010’s Wide Awake. Receiving mixed reviews from the press, the album went on to reach the Top Ten of the U.K. album chart. In April 2011, McElderry’s contract with Simon Cowell’s Syco label ended and in June of the same year he became a contestant on the ITV television show Popstar to Operastar, eventually going on to win the show. Signing to Decca, McElderry released his second album, Classic, in August 2011. A collection of easy listening and classical standards, the album’s success saw McElderry release a quick follow-up, Classic Christmas, just a few months later. His fourth album, Here’s What I Believe, came in September 2012. A collection of original material and covers, the album would find McElderry collaborating with Ludovico Einaudi and Marcella Detroit.
After the release of Here's What I Believe, McElderry had brief stints in the musical version of Dirty Dancing and a one-off performance as Tommy in the Who's Tommy. The following year, he embarked on a summer tour debuting new material, and while appearing in a seasonal pantomime version of Cinderella, released the single "Wonderful Dream (Holidays Are Coming)." 2014 saw him appearing on the U.K. TV show The Jump -- in which celebrities compete in a number of winter sports -- and eventually going on to win. McElderry followed the show with a 50-date tour across the U.K. Returning to the theater a year later; he scored a leading role in a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which embarked on a national tour at the beginning of 2016 and saw him praised for his performance as Joseph. Another U.K. tour followed later in the year and McElderry re-entered the studio to record his fifth album. The resulting Saturday Night at the Movies, which featured iconic songs from film and theater, appeared in mid-2017. ~ David Jeffries & Richard Wilson, Rovi
