Coast Contra was formed by rappers Ras and Taj Austin, who were raised in a musical family by parents with careers in the music industry. While still in high school, the Austin brothers teamed with rapper Rio Loz and began working on music together. After high school, the trio expanded their membership to include fourth rapper Eric Jamal, and they all lived and worked together in Los Angeles while constantly developing their music. The first properly released Coast Contra music came in 2019 with the song "Queen & Slim." The old-school-flavored tune was included on the soundtrack of a film by the same name and featured a guest verse from BJ the Chicago Kid. Coast Contra continued releasing new singles throughout 2021, as well as sharing the 10,000 Hours mixtape before the year was over. In 2022 the group released their debut studio album Apt. 505, named after the LA rental unit they shared while their music was in its incubatory phases. The album included several of Coast Contra's previous singles and featured guest appearances from Travis Walker, Sakari, and others. ~ Fred Thomas, Rovi
