Mapfumo began her career in 1972 as a backup vocalist for Thomas Mapfumo, later gaining additional experience with the Pied Pipers and OK Success. She has overcome the traditional discrimination against women in Zimbabwe to become a star in her own right, now fronting her own band (which features two of her brothers) and performing chiefly in rural areas, preferring to stay with her roots rather than seek overseas success. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
