Spillage Village was formed in 2010 by EarthGang members Johnny Olu O. Fann Venus and Doctur Eian Undrai Parker Dot and rapper JID. Shortly after linking up with producer Hollywood JB and his brother Jurdan Bryant, the five-person Spillage Village issued their debut project, Bears Like This, in 2014. Following the album's release, the collective expanded to include rappers OG Maco and 6LACK and vocalist Marian Mereba. Combining an OutKast-influenced approach to melding contrasting musical elements, the new lineup of Spillage Village quickly released second album Bears Like This Too in 2015. 2016's Bears Like This Too Much had guest features from Bas, J. Cole and Quentin Miller. At this point, the various members of the collective were having success with their solo efforts, and Spillage Village was dormant for a time.
In 2020, they regrouped for their fourth album and first for J. Cole's Interscope-affiliated Dreamville label, Spilligion. The album centered around themes of religion and spirituality and cracked the Billboard 200 chart shortly after its release. ~ Fred Thomas, Rovi
