Drawing on a love of both rock roll and more acoustic music, singer/songwriter Laurie Geltman has garnered a solid following on the music-savvy Boston scene. The Baltimore-born Geltman began playing guitar and writing her first songs at the age of seven. Through the years, she continued to develop her skill as a guitarist, influenced by players such as Keith Richards, Robbie Robertson, and Jimmy Page. She enrolled in college to study film and art history but left to play music on the streets of Paris. Returning to Boston, Geltman attended the Berklee College of Music, graduating as a film score major (she would later have a song of hers used in an independent movie starring Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo). In 1992, she self-released a cassette-only collection of recordings entitled Departure, which made several Boston music critics' Top Ten lists. She was a semi-finalist in radio station WBCN's well-known, annual battle of the bands in 1997 and found time to release No Power Steering, which included backing vocals by Patty Griffin. The album was re-released through Eastern Front Records a year later and she would be nominated for several Boston music awards, as well as landing a spot on that year's Lilith Fair tour. In 1999, Geltman embarked on a solo tour of the West Coast (including Alaska), opening for acts like Catie Curtis and Cheryl Wheeler.
