Manhattan-raised lo-fi musician Gabrielle Smith adopted the name Eskimeaux, a tribute to her Tlingit heritage, in 2007 for her solo output. A member of the Epoch, a Brooklyn arts collective that's included Florist and Told Slant, among others, she has frequently collaborated with these and other musicians both on the road and on recording projects. Eskimeaux's early releases -- 2008's iglu songs and 2010's Doubt EP, I Am Spiral, and Ixsixán -- were eclectic, occasionally acoustic but mostly electronic noise explorations that eventually gave way to the experimental indie folk of Two Mountains, released in 2011. An eponymous LP followed a year later, with a collection of demos titled Igluenza appearing in 2013. Combining synths, effects, guitars, and drums, her bouncier and more structured O.K. emerged in 2015. Released on Double Double Whammy and resembling the sound of her frequent collaborator Frankie Cosmos (alias of songwriter Greta Kline), 2016's Year of the Rabbit doubled down on the catchy, introspective lo-fi. ~ Marcy Donelson, Rovi
