Biography
A group dedicated to transforming itself, Mr. Twin Sister blends disco, techno, dream pop, jazz, and Latin influences into a sultry, ambitious sound of their own. Rising from the ashes of the mischievous indie pop outfit Twin Sister, the band's self-titled 2014 album anticipated the slinky fusion of R&B, indie, and dance that became ubiquitous a few years later, while 2018's Salt seamlessly added touches of jazz and 2-step into the album's philosophical songwriting. With 2022's Latin- and disco-tinged Al Mundo Azul, Mr. Twin Sister reaffirmed their flair for incorporating just about any style into their equally sensual and thoughtful music.

The band's first incarnation, Twin Sister, formed in 2008, when vocalist Andrea Estella -- the bilingual daughter of an immigrant parent who grew up listening to the B-52s, Talking Heads, and Björk -- and her longtime friend bassist Gabe D'Amico joined forces with keyboardist Dev Gupta, guitarist/vocalist Eric Cardona, and drummer Bryan Ujueta, all of whom they met in Long Island, New York's music scene. Their first EP, Vampires with Dreaming Kids, was self-released that year on their Infinite Best label. After tours with tUnE-yArDs and Xiu Xiu, the band issued its second EP, Color Your Life, in March 2010 (in 2012, Kendrick Lamar sampled the Color Your Life song "Meet the Frownies" for his Dr. Dre collaboration "The Recipe"). A year later, Twin Sister appeared on a split single with the Luyas.

The following year, Twin Sister signed to Domino Records and issued their debut album, In Heaven, that September. That year, Estella appeared in the Veronica Mars movie, which also featured two of Twin Sister's songs on its soundtrack. Despite the acclaim In Heaven earned, the band wasn't entirely happy with the album, and they soon left Domino. During this time, Twin Sister suffered other hardships, including Estella's multiple sclerosis diagnosis and a car crash while on tour in Tallahassee, Florida that left them lucky to be alive. Additionally, a potential legal dispute with a '70s rock band named Twin Sisters, and a Christian educational music organization of the same name, led the group to rename itself Mr. Twin Sister.

The new name was part of a complete reinvention. After taking time to recover from the injuries they sustained in the collision, the members of Mr. Twin Sister recorded their second album with producer Jon Low and members of Ava Luna. Spanning funk, disco, house, jazz, and techno, Mr. Twin Sister's sprawling self-titled album arrived in September 2014 on the band's Twin Group label. Two years later, the band issued "Poor Relations" as a single to benefit the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's efforts to block the Dakota Access Pipeline. In 2018, Mr. Twin Sister returned with the non-album single Power of Two/Echo Arms in July. That October, the band -- which consisted of Estella, D'Amico, Gupta, and Cardona -- issued its second full-length, Salt, a smoothly funky set of songs exploring politics, spirituality, and different forms of identity. The album was also the band's first to feature lyrics in Spanish, from which Estella had become estranged as an adult. The following year, Cardona released the solo album Cell Songs, and Mr. Twin Sister returned in November 2022 with Al Mundo Azul, a lively, disco-informed set with more bilingual songwriting from Estella. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
