Biography
Due to his busy schedule in the studios, Michael Lang did not record his first solo album until 1994, after more than 30 years as a professional pianist. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1963, played with Paul Horn (1964-1965), and then moved to Los Angeles and started working in the studios. Lang worked with Stan Kenton's Neophonic Orchestra (1966), Don Ellis (1967), and Tom Scott (1968), and recorded with John Klemmer, Milt Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, Lee Konitz, Art Pepper, Sarah Vaughan, and many others, mostly outside of jazz. Lang always played jazz locally on an occasional basis and finally in 1994 came out with his own album, jazz treatments of Henry Mancini songs for Varèse Sarabande. He also performed on a large number of television and film scores. Michael Lang died on August 5, 2022, at his home in Studio City, California, due to lung cancer. He was 80 years of age. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
