Biography
BBQ is a blues-punk-roots one-man band featuring Montreal-based guitarist, singer, percussionist, songwriter, and all-around visionary Mark Sultan (who has previously done business as Kib Husk, Creepy, Bridge Mixture, and Mark Spaceshit). A former member of the Spaceshits and Les Sexareenos, Sultan is also the prexy of Sultan Records, which has released quality sides from like-minded acts such as the Deadly Snakes, the Scat Rag Boosters, and the Daylight Irritations. Eager to find a vehicle for his new songs and unable to get a band going, Sultan combined his talents as a guitarist and drummer and introduced BBQ in 2002 with the release of a single on the Italian Goodbye Boozy label. A full-length album appeared in 2003; it was released simply as BBQ by Alien Snatch Records in Germany, and later appeared in expanded form on Sounds of Subterrania as The Complete Recordings, Vol. 1. Sultan and BBQ moved up to the garage rock big time in 2005 when the fabled Bomp label released his second full-length, Tie Your Noose -- it was one of the last projects coordinated by label founder Greg Shaw prior to his death in late 2004. Sultan also teamed up with his former Spaceshits bandmate King Khan for a series of albums under the banner the King Khan BBQ Show, beginning with a self-titled effort in 2005. With 2007's The Sultanic Verses, Sultan stopped using the BBQ moniker for his solo efforts, but he nodded to his creative past with a 2017 album for In the Red Records titled BBQ - Mark Sultan. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
