Biography
Best known as violinist/multi-instrumentalist/founding member of Camper Van Beethoven, Jonathan Segel has been making music professionally since the mid-'80s, releasing albums under his own name as well as the bands Hieronymus Firebrain and Jack Jill. However, he’s also active in the avant-garde/free improv world, having received a Master’s Degree in Music Composition from Mills College where he studied with Fred Frith, Alvin Curran, and Pauline Oliveros (and earlier with Gordon Mumma as an undergrad). Chaos Butterfly is the name of his electronic/improv project, active since 2004. He’s also been composing music for various dance companies since the early '90s. Although still active in Camper Van Beethoven, Segel relocated to Europe in the 2010's where he became active with improvising space-rockers Øresund Space Collective. He also formed improvising trio Sista Maj with Andreas Axelsson and Mikael Tuominen, with their debut recording appearing at the end of 2016. The solo album Superfluity was released in February 2017. ~ Sean Westergaard, Rovi
