Biography
Planet Drum is a Grammy Award-winning pan-global percussion ensemble that traffics in grooves from all over the world. Founded by Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart in 1991, Planet Drum's eponymous debut album featured Zakir Hussain, Vikku Vinayakram, Sikiru Adepoju, Babatunde Olatunji, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Giovanni Hidalgo, and Frank Colón. It spent 26 weeks atop Billboard's World Music albums chart and took home the inaugural Best World Music Album award at that year's Grammys. 2007's Global Drum Project saw the core quartet of Hart (U.S.), Hussain (India), Adepoju (Nigeria), and Hidalgo (Puerto Rico) deliver a wide-ranging effort that added electronic elements to their ambient, ethno-fusion sound. Like its predecessor, the LP won the Best Contemporary World Music Album Grammy Award. Fifteen years later, the foursome returned with In the Groove, another unifying set of organic/electronic trance-inducing beats. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
