Biography
The Spanish ensemble Forma Antiqva specializes in performances of early music, and while it varies in size and instrumentation, depending on the repertoire, at its core are the founders of the group, theorbist Daniel Zapico, harpsichordist and organist Aarón Zapico, and Baroque guitarist Pablo Zapico. Formed in 1999 in the brothers' native town of Langreo, the ensemble follows Baroque scholarship and plays with instruments of the period, augmenting its forces with guest artists who share its dedication to historically informed practices. Forma Antiqva's first international tour in 2005 took it to Bolivia and Brazil, and in 2007 the group toured Singapore and Australia. Most of its concert activities have been based in Spain, and it is noted for its participation in music festivals in Granada, Seville, Vélez-Blanco, San Sebastián, and other Spanish cities, though it has also performed across Europe, South America, and Asia. Forma Antiqva has also appeared with the Asturias Symphony Orchestra, demonstrating its broad appeal to concertgoers. As scholars, the Zapico brothers work with musicologist María Sanhuesa Fonseca in reconstructing and preserving manuscripts in the archive of the Catedral de San Salvador de Oviedo, and is the resident ensemble of the Palacio de Congresos Príncipe Felipe in Oviedo. Forma Antiqva records exclusively for Winter Winter. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
