Biography
Richard Boothby performs viola da gamba music from the Middle Ages to the present and is on the forefront of expanding the contemporary repertoire for the instrument. He studied performance practice with Nikolaus Harnoncourt in Salzburg, then founded the Purcell Quartet in 1984. In 1985, he became a founding member of the viol consort Fretwork. He has toured Europe, Japan, and the United States and has made over 50 recordings for Hyperion, Chandos, Virgin Classics, and Harmonia Mundi. Boothby is a professor of viola da gamba at the Royal College of Music in London and professor of both Baroque cello and viola da gamba at the Welsh College of Music and Drama., Rovi
