Biography
Thomas was the son of Joseph who was the brother of Ambrose and the patriarch of the Lupo family of musicians. They were of Italian origin but settled in London where Thomas became a court musician shortly after the death of Ambrose. It is possible that Thomas was born in London but this is not certain. As a violist or violinist Thomas performed upon this instrument for the majority of his life though professionally he was responsible for composing for lutes and voices. The instrumental pieces that he composed were often in five or six parts with scored attempts at exceptioanlly skillful requirements for the bass and the upper parts. His three part fantasies, however, were much more clearly defined with the scoring of two upper parts and a bass. This was an early form of the trio sonata. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
