Sherelle Thomas grew up in Northeast London, listening to R&B, hip-hop, and alternative rock. She developed a passion for dance music through listening to several BBC radio programs during the 2000s, particularly DJs like Mistajam and Annie Mac. Sherelle began to DJ at South London station Reprezent during the 2010s, and found her voice as a DJ when she started incorporating footwork into her sets, inspired by artists like DJ Rashad and Machinedrum. She gained the support of labels and crews like Hyperdub and Juke Bounce Werk, and opened for the Prodigy at Brixton Academy in 2017. By 2018, Sherelle was combining footwork and jungle in her sets, to devastating effect. She became an overnight sensation when her blistering February 2019 appearance on Boiler Room went viral. The set also generated a bit of controversy, over a moment when a fellow DJ rewound a track Sherelle was playing, which was seen as disrespectful and stealing her moment. (The track playing at the time, Fixate's jungle remix of the U.K. garage classic "R.I.P. Groove" by Double 99, subsequently became an underground smash in its own right.)
Following the Boiler Room set, Sherelle became highly sought-after, and her bookings rapidly increased, both on her own and as part of 6 Figures Gang, a crew that includes Fauzia, LCY, Yazzus, and other female DJs. Sherelle started a year-long stint on BBC Radio 1's Residency, and was named a breakthrough star by publications like DJ Mag and Mixmag. Along with Naina, she co-founded the Hooversound label, dedicated to various types of high-BPM dance music. She delivered standout mixes for Dekmantel and Bang Face, among others, and her 2020 appearance on the Pete Tong-hosted Essential Mix was named the program's best mix of the year.
In 2021, Sherelle released her first single, a brisk workout called "160 Down the A406." She also launched Beautiful, a label focusing on Black and LGBTQI+ dance producers, with a compilation featuring artists like Tim Reaper, Loraine James, and Kareem Ali. Fabric Presents Sherelle, a characteristically energetic set for the London club's mix series, was issued in November.
