Already well-schooled in a variety of Appalachian fiddle, banjo, and folk dance traditions, Morgan teamed up with adventurous Virginia trio the Black Twig Pickers as a guest on their 2012 release, Whompyjawed. Within a year, she had joined as a full-fledged member, adding a new depth to the group on subsequent releases like 2013's Rough Carpenters and the 2015 Steve Gunn collaboration Seasonal Hire. Meanwhile, she had met another like-minded folk musician, Sarah Louise, through a Black Twig concert and together they formed the duo House and Land. A mutual love of specific strains of Appalachian and Ozark music, British folk, and experimental improvisation helped seal their creative bond and the duo released a pair of albums together including 2019's critically lauded Across the Field.
Tapping into her diverse influences and the progressive tendencies of her previous projects, Morgan's 2020 debut album, Thread, wove together American and British folk with unique originals and an eclectic sense of tradition and freshness. A second solo album, Cups, followed in 2021 bearing a distinctly looser and more improvisatory approach. ~ Timothy Monger, Rovi
