Artificial Material
from Detroit, MI
Biography
Artificial Material is the solo project of Adam Lee Miller, a founding member of Detroit electro/new wavers Le Car. Also the man behind the Ersatz Audio and Monoplaza imprints, Miller's solo AM material has appeared in a pretty even split between his own label and the Cologne-based electro imprint Electrecord (with the tracks Foreign Motel and Wireless Intercom both making it onto Studio !K7's Electrecord 2000 compilation). In addition to the label's debut release, Miller's second AM release for his own label was a four-track split 12-inch with Electrecord's Third Electric; entitled Duologue, the EP's two AM tracks are quite representative, pairing thin, minimal electronics with pronounced, new wave-derived two-beat rhythms and bouncy, exaggerated analog basslines. Miller's musical roots unsurprisingly reflect this connection; although he grew up on the same brand of Detroit techno and electro as contemporaries like AUX 88 and Will Web, his passion lay primarily with first-wave European electro-pop innovators such as Visage, Soft Cell, the Normal, and John Foxx. Miller studied art history and remains active in painting. He formed Ersatz Audio and Monoplaza with fellow Le Car members Ian R. Clark and Robert Salzmann in 1995, after tiring of waiting for the numerous European labels interested in releasing their work to actually follow through on licensing; a self-titled Artificial Material album appeared later that year, followed in 1997 by Duologue. ~ Sean Cooper, Rovi
