Biography
One of the most distinguished Brazilian bass players of the '80s and '90s, Nico Assumpção started to learn bass at 16. In 1976, he moved to New York, NY, to further his music studies. In that city, he regularly played with Don Salvador and Charlie Rouse, having performed with Fred Hersch, John Hicks, Steve Slagle, Larry Willis, and Victor Lewis, as well. In 1981, Assumpção returned to Brazil and launched Nico Assumpção, the second solo contrabass album released in Brazil. After 1982, he became a busy session man, having participated on hundreds of albums by Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, João Bosco, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Maria Bethânia, Edu Lobo, Leo Gandelman, and many others. Assumpção also performed extensively abroad, with noted artists like Kenny Barron, Joe Henderson, Pat Metheny, Larry Coryell, Eliane Elias, Lee Konitz, Michel Legrand, Harvey Mason, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Ernie Watts, and Phil Woods. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
