Biography
Pianist Lily Maisky has established a promising career in performances and recordings both with her father, cellist Mischa Maisky, and with other musicians. Maisky was born in Paris on July 28, 1987, but soon moved to Brussels, Belgium, and had quite an international upbringing. She often traveled with her father to festivals around Europe and in Israel. Maisky attended the Purcell School for Young Musicians in the U.K. as a teen, also studying with Lyl Tiempo, Ilana Davids, Alan Weiss, and Hagit Kerbel. At the Purcell School, she took classes in jazz as well as classical piano. Her teachers in master classes have included such luminaries as Joseph Kalichstein and Martha Argerich. Maisky's brother Sascha has played the violin, resulting in a family piano trio. "My father always had that vision of us making music together, but it was never forced," Lily told the German Ensemble magazine. "He gently encouraged both of us, giving musical advice in a way that was fun, not pushing technique, but rather inspiring my imagination." In 2005 Lily gave her first professional recitals with her father in Italy. She has gone on to perform as a concerto soloist, independently of Mischa Maisky, with such conductors as Thomas Sanderling, Leonard Slatkin, Alberto Veronesi, and Jack Martin Händler, and she has performed solo and in ensembles at such venues as the BeethovenHalle in Bonn, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Moscow Conservatory, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Seoul Performing Arts Center, the Vienna Musikverein, the Royal Festival Hall in London, and even Buckingham Palace. In concert she has accompanied Janine Jansen, Renaud Capuçon, Sergey Krylov, and the Szymanowski Quartet, as well as joining Argerich for duo performances. She has recorded with Mischa Maisky, for instance on the 2011 duo album ¡España! and the 2018 collection Adagietto (on the Deutsche Grammophon label), and with violinist Philippe Quint in the autobiographical album Opera Breve (2013, on Avanti). ~ James Manheim, Rovi
