Andrew D'Angelo
Biography
Raised in Seattle, Alto saxophonist Andrew D'Angelo began playing professionally in his hometown at age 14. He relocated to New York at age 20, spent five years in Boston, and then returned to New York, where he has become quite active within the downtown avant-garde community. He tours and records regularly with the very popular Matt Wilson Quartet. In addition, he has performed and recorded with the Either/Orchestra, the Reid Anderson Quintet, Orange then Blue, Bobby Previte, Erik Friedlander, and Kurt Rosenwinkel. Human Feel, a group D'Angelo formed with drummer Jim Black and saxophonist Chris Speed, released several albums during the course of the '90s. Other projects have included In Hear, Smack for Some, and the big band Standard Deviation. D'Angelo's Squawnk trio, featuring Ben Street on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums, released its debut CD in 2000 on the Lyceum label, which D'Angelo formed in partnership with Curtis Hasselbring.
