Biography
Swiss conductor and flutist Thierry Fischer studied flute with Aurèle Nicolet, and began his career playing with orchestras in Hamburg and Zurich. He performed as principal flutist with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe under Claudio Abbado, and conducted his first concerts with this orchestra. Fischer also conducted the Netherlands Ballet Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra, and the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra. He served as principal conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales from 2006 to 2012, touring with the orchestra and appearing annually at the BBC Proms. In September 2009, he was named music director of the Utah Symphony Orchestra, where his contract extends through the 2021-2022 season. He has made guest appearances with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta, Ensemble InterContemporain, and other groups. In 2016, Fischer was named as principal guest conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. He has recorded for Reference Recordings, Hyperion, Signum Classics, Berlin Classics, and Deutsche Grammophon, among several other labels. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
