Biography
Sonoran Yuridia is Mexican pop singer Yuridia Gaxiola. Possessed of a powerful, emotionally resonant, theatrical alto, her elegant delivery and sophisticated arrangements have resulted in best-selling albums and singles. Her 2005 debut, La Voz de un Ángel, went triple platinum. 2006's Habla el Corazon went multi-platinum at home as well as the U.S. Three hit singles led 2007's Entre Mariposas to multi-platinum status. She returned in 2009 with the best-selling Nada Es Color de Rosa featuring a hit duet -- "Todas Las Noches" -- with Italy's Sonohra, and released the triple-platinum Para Mí in 2011. The hits comp Lo Esencia de Yuridia appeared in 2013 and was followed two years later by 6. The live collection Primera Fila appeared in 2017 and in 2022, she released Pa’Luego es Tarde, her first album of Mexican Regional Music.

Born Yuridia Francisca Gaxiola Flores on October 4, 1986, in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, she sang throughout her childhood and adolescence. She took second place on the fourth generation of La Academia, a Mexican singing competition and reality television show. Though she didn't take first place, Yuridia has by far eclipsed the show's winner, Erasmo Catarino, not only in her popular credibility, but also in record sales, with all six of her studio albums hitting number one on the Mexican album charts, as well as the Top Ten of the U.S. Latin Pop charts. Stylistically placed firmly in the Latin pop category, Yuridia favored dance club-influenced selections that supported her powerful, dramatic song interpretations. Her strong voice and control beyond her years earned her the reputation for having "La Voz de un Ángel," which consequently became the title of her 2005 debut CD. Consisting of covers of popular hits that Yuridia performed on La Academia, the album was led by her rendition of Robbie Williams' "Angel," which became her biggest hit. At the age of 19, Yuridia had become one of Mexico's top-selling artists, with her debut record achieving diamond status, an accomplishment only paralleled in the previous ten years by superstar Luis Miguel.

Habla el Corazón, another album of covers, followed that immensely successful album in late 2006 and was certified platinum within a matter of weeks. Yuridia's third effort, Entre Mariposas, appeared in late 2007 and was her first to contain original material, penned by Reyli, Ilan Chester, Mario Domm, and herself. Following the 2008 collection Remixes, Yuridia returned in 2009 with the ballad-heavy full-length Nada Es Color de Rosa, another platinum-selling number one smash. Two years later, she released her fifth proper album, Para Mi. It was her biggest success since Habla el Corazón, eventually selling more than 200,000 copies in Mexico alone; it contained the number one hit "Ya Te Olvidé." She released her first greatest-hits compilation, Lo Esencial de Yuridia, in 2012, which hit the Top Ten Mexican album charts. After a few years of inactivity, Yuridia returned in 2015 with 6, another chart-topping success. Following a Mexican tour, the singer wet on an extended personal hiatus.

In 2017, Sony Music International released the live Primera Fila as a stopgap -- unlike other artists in her genre, Yuridia is careful about releasing compilations. That said, it would still be another five years before Yuridia emerged with the surprising and highly anticipated Pa’Luego Es Tarde, her first album of Mexican Regional songs. They were composed by some of her homeland's finest songwriters including Eden Muñoz (who also served as her music director), Horacio Palencia, José Luis Roma, Pepe Aguilar, and Maria Elena Terrazas Gonzalez and Oscar Ivan Calderon Gonzalez, among others. It included duets with Angela Aguilar ("Qué Agonia"), Banda MS de Sergio Lizarraga ("Y Que Tal Si Funciona") and Munoz ("Me Hace Tanto Bien'). Just before its October release, Yuridia announced the Pa' Later Es Tarde USA Tour. Commencing in November, she played Laredo and Houston Texas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and Washington, D.C. She also announced more dates in 2023. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez, Rovi
