Biography
A distinct low brass ensemble, Big Sackbut are known for their adventurously experimental brand of chamber jazz. Drawing inspiration from outfits like World Saxophone Quartet and Art Ensemble of Chicago, Big Sackbut have released studio albums like 2012's Joe Fiedler's Big Sackbut and concert albums like 2020's Live in Graz.
Led by trombonist Joe Fiedler, Big Sackbut formed in 2011 in New York and is named after an early type of trombone used during the Renaissance and Baroque eras. Along with Fiedler, the group has featured a rotating ensemble of musicians, all bandleaders in their own right, including trombonist Josh Roseman, trombonist Ryan Keberle, trombonist Luis Bonilla, and tuba player Marcus Rojas. They debuted in 2012 with Joe Fiedler's Big Sackbut. The following year, they returned with Sackbut Stomp featuring Sex Mob slide trumpeter Steven Bernstein. A concert album, Live in Graz, arrived in June of 2020 and found the group playing originals alongside compositions by Roswell Rudd and Charles Mingus. ~ Matt Collar, Rovi
