Biography
British improvisational pianist and composer Tom Rogerson has created music in a wide variety of genres, including jazz, post-rock, and ambient. The Suffolk-born musician began playing piano as a child, and later studied at the Royal Academy of Music under the guidance of composer Harrison Birtwistle. He began performing improvisational piano concerts during the early 2000s, making his debut at the Aldeburgh Festival in 2002. He moved to New York City for a short while, and recorded his self-titled debut album along with bassist Reid Anderson (of the Bad Plus) and saxophonist Michael Lewis (of Happy Apple) in 2005. Subsequently, he moved to London and worked extensively with singer/songwriter Jeremy Warmsley before forming electronic post-rock trio Three Trapped Tigers along with Adam Betts and Matt Calvert in 2007. The band released three EPs between 2008 and 2010 (later compiled as Numbers: 1-13) before issuing their debut album Route One or Die in 2011. Rogerson also recorded Cable Street Shorts with saxophonist Tomas Challenger in 2010, and worked with Hong Kong-born singer/songwriter Emmy the Great, as well as experimental rock trailblazers the Red Krayola. Three Trapped Tigers' second album, Silent Earthling, created utilizing Brian Eno's Oblique Strategies system, was released in 2016. Rogerson then collaborated with Eno, resulting in the full-length Finding Shore, which was released by Dead Oceans in December of 2017. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
