Biography
Established by Broadway Records, Broadway for Orlando is a group of theater artists who gathered on June 15, 2016 to record the Burt Bacharach-Hal David classic "What the World Needs Now Is Love” to benefit GLBT Community Center of Central Florida. The effort was organized after a mass shooting three days earlier at the gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando killed 50 people (including the shooter) and injured dozens of others. An over 20-piece orchestra and more than 60 vocalists appear on the single, which traded lyrics between dozens of well-known Broadway alums: Sara Bareilles, Kristen Bell, Matthew Broderick, Audra McDonald, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Bernadette Peters, just to name a few. The all-star production team featured music direction by Seth Rudetsky, Steve Marzullo, and Marc Shaiman. A tribute to the victims as well as a fundraiser, the song appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 three weeks later. ~ Marcy Donelson, Rovi
